A BIG congratulations goes out to actress Tina Lifford and filmmakers Ayoka Chinzera and Samantha Vincent. The ladies were honored recently during the Women Superstars Luncheon at the 2018 BronzeLens Film Festival.

The event took place at the illustrious Atlanta Marriott Marquis and was hosted by HGTV star and media maven Egypt Sherrod.

This week on The Local Take I speak with Roshawn, a single mother who found herself homeless and luckily received support from The Nicholas House.  I also speak with Dennis Bowman, the executive director of The Nicholas House.

Roshawn explains that she became homeless after a family member who provided her with a place to live was evicted. Her family then moved into an extended stay facility. This option proves to be exceptionally expensive, with monthly rates sometimes more than rent or a mortgage.

Join us for The CheckUp With Dr. Courtney M. Shelton, MD Saturday morning at 8:30 for a thought provoking discussion about plant-based diets. In this case Dr. Shelton is joined by Bridgette Humphrey of the "Electric Girls." They are spreading the word about an alkaline based "electric" vegan diet. To find out more about the Electric Girls, click here.

Join WCLK's Debb Moore for the "Jazz, Jokes, Blues & Soul Brunch" this Sunday, September 2 at City Winery Atlanta. The afternoon will be filled with hand-clapping, toe-tapping music from Atlanta's very own Theresa Hightower, Alex Lattimore and Reggie Hines along with comedy from Marvin Hunter. The event is presented by Entertainment Connections and takes place from 12 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Taste of Soul Atlanta (TOSA) is a two day experience.

When Vogue unveiled its annual fashion issue earlier this month, the Internet took notice — not just because Beyoncé graced the cover but also because of the photographer behind the image.

That credit goes to Tyler Mitchell, a 23-year-old from Atlanta who became the first African-American photographer to shoot a Vogue cover in the magazine's 125-year history.

Saturday on The Local Take on WCLK I spoke with Glen Simmonds, founder of the Atlanta Caribbean Jerk Festival taking place on Sunday, September 2nd at the Georgia International Horse Park in Conyers.  Glen explains why this event is a must for anyone who appreciates the culture of the Caribbean. In fact if you didn't get to the Caribbean this year, a short trip to the Atlanta Caribbean Jerk Festival will make you think you're in the islands.

Local Take Profiles New Hope AME Church
