The Local Take continues conversations on health Saturday, December 12 at 7:00 a.m. on Jazz 91.9 WCLK by speaking with Dr. Pamela Roshell, regional director of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service; and, Dr. Lisa Simmons, a family practitioner from Oakhurst Medical.
Dr. Roshell reminds us that if you sign up for health care under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) at HealthCare.gov by December 15 you will have insurance coverage by January 1, 2016. She reminds us that access to affordable preventative medicine is one of the ways insurance is making a difference in health outcomes. Dr. Roshell shares her personal story of preventative medicine saving her life via a mammogram. Dr. Roshell recommends that everyone have an annual physical. She encourages listeners to meet with navigators or call 1 (800) 318-2556 for information on subsidies for coverage and exemptions from taxes.
Dr. Lisa Simmons is a family doctor at Oakhurst Medical. She shares in the call for preventative medicine. Dr. Simmons shares an anecdote about a patient who came in due to a bad cold and was presented with a blood pressure reading of 200/150. She emphasizes the need for the community to have access to preventative medicine so that healthier outcomes are realized. Dr. Simmons shares with us why family medicine is so important and her ability of treating members of the same family from babies to seniors allows for a special bond.
