Illinois-born pianist Brian Simpson was influenced by Oscar Peterson as he grew up listening to jazz music, but his music over a career including seven albums has fit into a contemporary groove that you hear on WCLK. On his latest release Persuasion(Shanachie), he brings funk and jazz with help from musicians including Peter White and Boney James. You can hear cuts from Persuasion on WCLK at various times, particularly during Serenade To The City, Monday-Fridays overnight 10pm-2am.

Programming on Jazz 91.9 WCLK is made possible in part by St. James Live, presenting Keyboardist and Composer Brian Simpson, one night only, Sunday June 10.   Simpson has played with George Duke, Gerald Albright and Boney James; and, toured with Janet Jackson and Teena Marie.   He wrote the R&B hit First Time for Surface.  Doors open for this exclusive performance at 6:00 p.m., with showtime at 7:00 p.m.   St.

Support for Jazz 91.9 WCLK comes from Wade Ford Concert Series presenting Smooth Summer Nights on Saturday, July 16, 6:00 p.m. at Mable House Barnes Ampitheatre.  The Smooth Summer Nights concert will feature performances by:  Kim Waters, Ben Tankard, Brian Simpson, Eric Darius and Steve Cole.  The show will be hosted by WCLK's Morris Baxter.  Ticket information is available here.

Horn player and composer Joey Somerville is more than just a friend to WCLK, he's part of the family. He is also part of a great lineup Saturday night at Mable House Barnes Ampitheatre, part of the Wade Ford Smooth Summer Jazz Series. This weekend's edition includes Peabo Bryson, Brian Simpson, Kim Waters and another great friend of WCLK, Norman Brown.
