SATURDAY OCT. 29: Spivey Hall presents Wycliffe Gordon and the International All Stars
Clayton State's Spivey Hall opens its new season of jazz performances with the one and only Wycliffe Gordon and the International All Stars on Saturday, October 29 at 7:30 pm.
Jazz trombonist Wycliffe Gordon is “one of those performers who instantly connect with an audience” (JazzTimes). A former veteran member of the Wynton Marsalis Septet and Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, the Statesboro, Georgia native tours the world performing hardswinging, straight-ahead jazz, acclaimed by audiences and critics alike.
Gordon’s “signature virtuosity” is “throwing off fast-flying phrases, novel sonic effects and great flurries of notes with apparent ease” (Chicago Tribune). “Like a great vocalist, Gordon unspools gloriously inventive lines” (Los Angeles Times).
A leading headliner, composer, arranger, educator, and recording artist, “Gordon combines his varied stylistic influences with a prodigious technique. One gets the feeling that there is nothing he can’t do on the instrument – from blazingly fast, meticulously articulated bebop lines to sweet-toned ballads, gospel shouts to evocative plunger and multi-phonic statements that run the gamut of human expression” (JazzTimes).
