Mar 17: Friday Jazz at the High presents Madoka Oshima

SHAWN S. SHEPARD

Friday Jazz at the High continues this month on Friday, March 17 from 6pm to 10pm with Madoka Oshima. The evening is hosted by WCLK's Jamal Ahmad.

Curated by Oshima, the event will feature two musical areas where musicians will play throughout the evening, layering notes and improvising melodies. In addition to the great sounds, Friday Jazz patrons will also get to enjoy the Joseph Stella: Visionary Natureexhibition.

Madoka Oshima was born in Tokyo, Japan. She showed a strong interest in music from an early age and began taking piano lessons at the age of six. She also studied violin, sanshin, and wadaiko, traditional Japanese instruments, as a teenager. She moved to the United States in 2002, first settling in New Orleans, Louisiana, where she began to study jazz seriously. In 2005, she relocated to Atlanta in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. She gained scholarships at music schools in Atlanta and received her Bachelor of Music degree in 2008.

Since 2007, Madoka has been an active performer in Atlanta in a variety of genres including jazz, classical, and R&B. Her original project, MO PLUS, is a blend of different styles and known for its unique sound. The group has performed concerts and events locally and internationally, including at the Jazz Matters concert series, Japan Fest, Rialto Center for the Arts’ jazz series “Feed Your Senses,” the Atlanta Masonic Center, Japan America Society events, Churchill Grounds Jazz Club, and jazz concerts in Tokyo, Japan, to name a few. She was on the piano faculty at the Lovett Conservatory of Music between 2008 and 2022. She now has an active piano studio in Atlanta that continues to grow, and she has been invited to give clinics and workshops at institutions and organizations such as the North Dekalb Music Teachers Association and The Westminster Schools.
