April Is Jazz Appreciation Month

Apr 2, 2013

Of course, every month is Jazz Appreciation Month at WCLK.  But April is officially dubbed so by the Smithsonian Institution.

Many of you will be receiving Jazz Appreciation Month posters as part of your pledge premiums during our recent drive.  You can find out more about the Smithsonian's offical celebration by visiting their site here.

Drummer E. C.  Coleman will be a featured performer at Atlanta's upcoming annual Jazz Festival.  He'll stop by on Jazz Tones with Jay Edwards this afternoon.

In between you can be sure to hear the greatest and the latest in mainstream jazz and latin rhythms that will put pep in your step on your Saturday.

Don't miss today's musical journey on Jazz Tones, 2p-6p Saturday afternoons on Jazz 91.9 FM, The Jazz Of The City.

WCLK is the Jazz AND public affairs of the city.  We have been since 1974.  Our current partnership with the Center for Cancer Research And Therapeutic Development at Clark Atlanta University is designed to increase awareness of prostate cancer, which kills a disproportionate number of African American men.

Jazz 91.9 WCLK in partnership with the International Television Services will host the second in a series of beta field testings of OVEE, a new social screening platform for watching television  starting April 1.  OVEE is a digital engagement platform which allows Jazz 91.9 to better serve communities by administering live, online screenings of most public broadcasting programs while interacting with participants in real time.

WCLK will be celebrating MARTA's Destination Campaign with a special edition of The S.O.U.L of Jazz, live from the College Park MARTA Station.  Stop by to win giveaways, play prize games, and meet Jazz 91.9 personalities, including Jamal Ahmad.  It all happens starting at 2:00pm Thursday, March 28.

Jay Edwards chatted with playwright and musician Jacqueline Clay Chester on Jazz Tones Saturday.  Ms. Chester's play A Conversation Between Malcolm X and President Obama: A One Act Play,  will be performed  at the Southwest Arts Center March 15-17 at 8pm.

Chester's play suggests its plot in the title, with Malcom's ghost appearing in the White House and the conversation that ensues between these two transformative African American leaders.
