Jazz Night In America Features A Look Back At Randy Weston

Jazz Pianist Randy Weston is credited with academically linking African music to Jazz and came of age in the 1950s playing in small combos for the Riverside Label. He passed away at age 92 on September 1, and his homegoing celebration will take place Monday, September 10 at the Cathedral of St. John The Divine in New York City . Listen to WCLK Sunday evening at 7pm for NPR's Jazz Night In America as they reprise a celebration of Weston's 90th Birthday with a performance by his quintet at the 2016 Panama Jazz Festival. Host Christian McBride also traveled to Weston's home to talk about the set in Panama, meeting Thelonious Monk and growing up in Brooklyn.
