Black History Month Re-Broadcast: WCLK'sThe Local Take Talks With Andrew Young

February 23 Re-Broadcast:

Saturday, January 18 at 8:00 a.m. on WCLK's The Local Take, you can listen to my conversation with Andrew Young on the 90th birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr..  I joined the former mayor  of the City of Atlanta at the Andrew Young Foundation offices located in downtown Atlanta.

I asked him about the Civil Rights Movement and their work.  While sharing a few statistics, he mentioned that those were challenging days, but he prefers to look at the good things that are continuing to happen. In addition, we spoke about voter apathy and the need for our leaders to engage with the community.

I asked about Dr. King's quote on "the arc of the moral universe."  Ambassador Young explained to me that the arc is longer than I imagine. He continued to emphasize the positive change that continues to occur.  He spoke about his compatriots that are still living, C. T. Vivian and Rev. Joseph Lowery.  He admonished me about folks who lead with their emotions instead of  "getting smart" about creating change.

I asked him about Dr. King's quote on healthcare, "of all forms of inequality, injustice in healthcare is the most shocking and inhumane." Young said this was why we should seek to have universal healthcare in our country.

He spoke about the legacy of leadership in our community that began with the Civil Rights Movement.

This year Dr. Martin Luther King's National Holiday is celebrated on Monday, January 21.
