Christian Sands: Be Water

Mack Avenue Music

Christian Sands is one of the most dynamic young pianists currently playing Straight Ahead Jazz music. The late great Jay Edwards and Debb Moore were both playing his music on WCLK before anyone else in the city. We have hosted his Spivey Hall performances for years.

Anyone who has seen his Atlanta appearances with his own group or as part of his collaborations with Christian McBride (Inside Straight, Trio) knows Christian Sands is a major talent with an entire wing of the Jazz canon he's yet to compose. His third record for Mack Avenue Music is called Be Water and continues his upward trajectory as a Jazz player you should get to know better. With a tight-knit group and a pocketful of original compositions, Be Water is a deep, satisfying work. I'll be playing Steam and Sonar from this record Sunday night between 9pm until around midnight on Mainstream and Modern on Jazz 91.9 WCLK.

Sands called the record Be Water from this Bruce Lee quote:

"Empty your mind. Be formless, shapeless, like water. You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle. Now water can flow, or it can crash. Be water, my friend.”
