Jazz Tones Insights: Latin Jazz With Toca Percussionist Machito Jr--Mario Grillo

Join me for Jazz Tones on Atlanta's Jazz Station 91.9 WCLK on Sunday afternoon at 3pm. My special guest will be Mario Grillo, otherwise known as Machito, Jr.. From the 1940s to the 1960s, American urban culture in big cities spiked with with the introduction of Latin Jazz big bands. When reminiscing about the age of mambo and the Palladium Ballroom, a few names especially come to mind-- Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez, and Machito, the famed Cuban bandleader/maraca player, who caused a mini -revolution in music and dance. Dizzie Gillespie and Charlie Parker both made records with Machito.

Today thanks to Toca Percussion Artist Mario Grillo,  there still is a direct link to the blood line. Mario is the son of Machito, who was was born Francisco Raul Gutierrez Grillo. Mario has made his calling the revival of his father's legacy in the form of fresh, contemporary ensembles including  The Big 3 Palladium Orchestra. Mario has a new release  it is  called Machito Jr. & Afro-Cubology(For my Grandsons). So tune in Sunday afternoon for some great Latin Jazz and insight into one of the great Afro-Cuban musical families.
