June 9: NCNW Greater Atlanta Section Honors Foster Care Advocates

This week on The Local Take I speak with Courtney Sykes from the Greater Atlanta Section of the National Council of Negro Women, Monica Pantoja from The nsoro Foundation and Riheem Jefferson, a foster care recipient. Courtney Sykes shares that the National Council of Negro Women will host their 2nd Annual Triple Crown Derby Affair on June 9th  from noon - 3pm at the Georgian Terrace Hotel.  This fundraiser honors advocates in support of children in our community as they navigate various challenges from being adopted to "aging" out of the foster care system.

Monica Pantoja, the Executive Director of The nsoro Foundation is accepting the award for their founder Darrell May one of the NCNW honorees.  She shares with us how the organization was founded and the work that they do to provide foster care children with access to college. She mentions working with Carrie Steel-Pitts a group home for children and Riheem Jefferson.

Riheem shares his story of being placed at the Carrie Steel-Pitts home and how a chance meeting gained him a mentor and an attitude shift.  He shares his desire to attend college and acceptance to Savannah State. The nsoro Foundation came to his rescue when it his financial needs for college were lacking.

The NCNW will honor:

  • Fox 5 TV Wednesday's Child Program with the Georgia Department of Family Services
  • Roberta Shields, President of the Ludacris Foundation (mother of entertainer Ludacris)
  • The nsoro Foundation Presendent Darrell Mays
