The Local Take With Kiplyn Primus Discusses The Latino Vote And The Trump Effect

Project Q Atlanta
Jerry Gonzalez

The deadline to register to vote in the November election, including the presidential vote, is Tuesday, October 11. On The Local Take we are featuring various voter registration efforts between now and the registration deadline.  Saturday, July 23 at 7:00 a.m., I'll speak with Jerry Gonzalez, executive director, Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials (GALEO).

Latinos in Georgia represent a growing demographic and the ongoing national rhetoric about immigration is creating a possibility that Georgia could turn towards the Democratic Party in coming elections, as our traditionally 'red' state turns purple or blue.  Jerry mentions that Mitt Romney won the state of Georgia by a little more than 330,000 votes in the 2012 General Election, and this year there could be close to 30o,ooo new voters in November. Many are Latino citizens who never registered to vote and some are new citizens who register after receiving their citizenship. We'll discuss the possible 'Trump Effect' of the Latino vote come November.

We speak about the shared challenges African Americans and Latinos have in getting people to the polls. Jerry shares that there other barriers including language and access that impact the Latino community.
