The Local Take On Men's Mental Health - Fighting Through The Fear After Sexual Abuse

The Local Take will promote Men's Health in June, culminating with our Men's Community Health Forum on Saturday, June 25 at Northlake Mall from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.  We start this month talking about mental health and surviving traumatic events.   On Saturday, June 4 at 7:00 a.m. on The Local Take, I'll talk with C. David Moody, well-known, longstanding Atlanta developer.   His name adorns construction sites from Mercedes Benz Stadium to the Atlanta History Center.  He's also the victim of childhood sexual abuse. He recently wrote a book about his journey entitled Fighting Through The Fear.

Dave Moody shares with our listeners that he was sexually abused at age nine by a male babysitter. While he and his mother never spoke about what happened, his mother fired the babysitter and the family relocated, which allowed him to repress the abuse.

After experiencing panic attacks and having a nervous breakdown Moody sought counseling with the support of his young family.  This was happening just as he was starting his company C. D. Moody Construction.   It would take the Penn Statesexual abuse scandal for Moody to decide to go public with his own story.

He discusses the reluctance of men to tell their stories and shares the voices of men who have approached him to whisper "thank you" for his coming forward.  He stresses the importance of counseling in his healing. He acknowledges the reluctance of men to seek help explaining that "many haven't even told their wives."  With this in mind he launched Moody Speaksa resource for survivors.
