The Local Take Provides Connections For Returning Citizens

The Local Take on Jazz 91.9 WCLK  is  committed to an ongoing discussion about criminal justice reform in the communities we serve.   This week I speak with event founder Sharon C. Turner and Valencia Miller with the Governor's Office of Transition, Support and Re-Entry about the Seventh Annual Home for Good Forum and Job Fair.   The event takes place on Thursday, November 12 at Atlanta's John Marshall Law School from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.   The location for the forum is John Marshall Law School's Blackburn Conference Center located at 1405 Spring Street NW, Atlanta, GA 30309.

Sharon Turner, the organizer, speaks to us about the need for this program which addresses returning citizens. Returning citizens are starting their lives over often with less than $100. The forum in conjunction with The Governor's Office of Transition, Support and Reentry as well as the John Marshall Law School host this event. Organizations and employers interested in assisting returning citizens will be on hand to offer services and support.  Members of the legal community will be on hand offering pro-bono legal advice.

Ms. Turner also explains that she was once a returning citizen, now as an advocate for re-entry she knows the challenges that will be faced.  She shares that the challenges faced by returning citizens can include everything from education to employment.

We also speak directly with Ms. Valencia Miller from the Governor's Office of Transition, Support and Reentry.  Ms. Miller explains that by providing support to returning citizens, you reduce recidivism and provide an opportunity for people to have a life after they have served their time.

Ms. Miller explains that it is better for our community to have citizens who can contribute to society.
