The Local Take: Shawn Smash-Jett, Child Sex Trafficking, and the End of Back Page

The Local Take on WCLK has covered sex trafficking issues from the beginning as part of our engagement with the community. I spoke with Shawn Smash-Jett of Wealthy Divas and Shoptalk with Shay about her role as an activist against human trafficking. Shawn shares with our listeners that she attended the Coalition to End Sexual Exploitation Global Summitheld this month in Washington, DC.  She was there when the federal government shut down BackPage.com a site used to facilitate sex trafficking. The site had operated due to a loophole and has been shut down before, in this instance the owners were indicted.

I ask her to talk about her book Sex Trafficking: A Parent's Worst Nightmareand how it came to fruition.  Shawn shares stories about high school students who are being trafficked after school each day.  She speaks about nine-year old boys who are approached via video games. She explains that parents need to have difficult conversations with their children.
