The Local Take Talks Community Nutrition with Chef Ashley Keyes from CHOICES

Saturday morning at 8am on WCLK's The Local Take a topic we return to the topic of health in the community, particularly nutrition--what we eat and how we eat. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health, African American women have the highest rates of being overweight or obese compared to other groups in the U.S.. About four out of five African American Women are overweight or obese. And that means it is more likely that African American children will be obese. Doctors are seeing more and more obesity-related health problems in younger people. I reached out to Executive Chef Ashley Keyes with The CHOICES program to talk about how we can change that today.

Chef Ashley shares information about their new Community Teaching Kitchen (CTK) which opened in downtown Atlanta this month.  She also explains why cooking at home is the only way to control what you eat. The CTK is a unique project with an innovative approach towards health.  Health education workships, nutrient based cooking classes and chronic disease prevention workshops will be hosted at this new location.

Chef Ashley shares information about their on-going cooking classes for families where children and parents come together to discuss healthy eating choices and make a meal to share. Additionally this summer they will once again host Camp DIVAS a culinary wellness summer camp for girls.
