The Local Take Talks November 2 Omega Debate with Jonathan Matthews

Saturday morning on WCLK's The Local Take(8am) I spoke with Jonathan Matthews from the Delta Mu Mu Omega Psi Phi fraternity.  We speak about their upcoming high school "Great Debate" this inaugural event will take place on Saturday, November 2nd at Westlake High School from 10am - 12noon. This is part of the fraternity's Achievement Week.

Matthews shares the history of his fraternity and their relationship to debate. Their founding members were active debaters.  In the early 20th Century debate was a popular event where the challenges of the day were discussed on a broad scale through academic debate teams.  He speaks specifically about Melvin B. Tolson, professor of English at Wiley College, was the famed debate coach for that school and the subject of the 2007 biopic The Great Debaters.

This first debate will take place with competing teams from Westlake and Langston Hughes High School. The subject of this debate is about attending college - "Higher Education Is the Juice Worth the Squeeze" a popular subject discussed by academics and politicians.
