This week on The Local Take I speak with Dr. Jayne Morgan from the Association of Black Cardiologists about their upcoming Spirit of the Heart Health and Wellness Fair taking place on Saturday, November 16th from 8am - 1pm at New Life Community Ministries, 3592 Flat Shoals Road, Decatur, GA.
I ask Dr. Morgan to share exactly what is the Association of Black Cardiologists and why is the organization needed. She explains that the research increasingly points to heart disease being preventable. She shares the challenges that exist in our communities. Food deserts, no access to safe exercise, and lack of education.
The Spirit of the Heart Health and Wellness Fair began as a grassroots event for their organization and over the last 10 years it has grown to include exercise demonstrations, discussion with local health providers, a kids corner and more. In fact Dr. Morgan shares that she will be leading a pilates class at this year's event. Basic screenings for cholesterol, diabetes and hypertension will be offered, along with information on improvement that can be used by everyone.
She says that everyone should attend this event. Their sponsors include The Morehouse School of Medicine, Boston Scientific, Walgreens, CVS and the American Heart Association.
