This month The Local Take is sharing conversations with some of the students and professionals who started WCLK fifty years ago this month. Andre Bryant joined me at StoryCorps Atlanta in 2018 to speak about his student days and how he came to work at WCLK. Our conversation begins when Bryant explains that Tuskegee, his parent's alma mater, would not be the school for him.
Bryant’s sister was attending Spelman University and she suggested he come to Atlanta. Bryant begins his freshman year at Clark College as a political science major. He speaks about Reggie Williams a student who introduced him to WCLK and the Mass Communication department. Bryant explains that this is where he found his “niche” learning about mass media, television, film, and journalism.
He began working at WCLK on the news team but one Saturday he was asked to fill in for an on-air host and his show was born. He speaks about interviews with musicians including an opportunity that his father had to observe an interview with Les McCann.
Later in life led by prayer Bryant began a new career working in the Deaf community after graduating from Gallaudet University. He has signed for numerous musical artists, Iyanla Vanzant and the founder of Hillside Truth Center Dr. Barbara King who passed in 2020. Today, Bryant focuses more on his art and will host an Atlanta exhibition in the coming months.
