Debb Moore shares her thoughts about an amazing night at Symphony Hall featuring the ASO, Sullivan Fortner and special guests

And special it was! WCLK /91.9FM - Atlanta’s Jazz Station - and ASO attendees were treated to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s Rhapsody in Blue, featuring the extraordinary New Orleans - born Jazz pianist Sullivan Fortner!Under the inspired direction of guest conductor Kristina Poska, a sold-out, multigenerational audience experienced an exhilarating musical journey filled with dynamic highs, reflective lows, and all the beautifully nuanced moments in between -where melodies mingled, notes danced, and music spoke its own glorious language.

The evening’s featured musical selections also brought the timeless spirit of Porgy and Bess (1933-35 B’way Prem.,) George and Ira Gershwin’s celebrated American opera, into the spotlight. This iconic work, rich in melody and emotion, was a fitting addition to an evening devoted to the beauty and breath of orchestral music. And then there was Sullivan Fortner!I should say “the” Sullivan Fortner! (Hear him on WCLK/91.9) As his fingers danced across the keys, Fortner brought his distinctive artistry, rhythmic sensibility, and unmistakable Jazz spirit to the piano. His performance added yet another layer of sweetness to the music wafting through the hall.Although I would have welcomed more time with this phenomenal pianist - he did not return to the stage after intermission - ugh - I found myself hearing the unmistakable voices of Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald singing in my mind.Their legendary interpretations of Porgy and Bess seemed to linger in the air. I would like to think that had they been in attendance, they would have been proud!

And yes, what a lovely evening it was! With cocktails and dinner served before the concert, the experience offered more than a night at the symphony; it was an opportunity to celebrate music, fellowship, and the special community that WCLK continues to cultivate. WCLK’s beautiful supporter, Shelia Smith and her guest, winners of one of the WCLK recent Fall Membership Campaign’s grand prizes - helped make this night out at the symphony truly epic!

A special word of appreciation goes to Meredith Morse, newly appointed Artistic Administrator for the ASO, and Zachary Nelson, Artistic Liaison and Nan.Their professionalism, graciousness, and attentive patron service helped make the evening feel welcoming and exceptionally well organized.Thank you both for the laughter and representing the ASO so beautifully!

Here’s the takeaway! When Jazz, symphonic brilliance, legendary American song, and the uplifting community spirit of WCLK/91.9FM come together -the result is an evening worth remembering! Kevin, you had us at “Symphony, anyone?” Next!
