Saturday, March 17 on The Local Take on Jazz 91.9 WCLK, Dr. Zandraetta Tims-Cook joined me in the studio to talk about HIV/AIDS Awareness Month for Women and Girls. I asked her why we are in epidemic mode and what can women do to end the spread of HIV.
She talked about the Heather Ivy Society, a group of professional women who gather to support each other without fear of stigma. Some of the women are positive and some are there for support.
Dr. Tims-Cook explained that having sex in Atlanta increases your risk for contracting HIV because of the number of sexually active people in this community who are positive. The first thing that you should do before consummating a relationship is to take a HIV test.
We can end this epidemic by practicing safe sex, staying aware of your status and decreasing your risk.
