March 26: Sean Jones Quartet at Clayton State's Spivey Hall
Clayton State's Spivey Hall presents an intimate evening with the Sean Jones Quartet on Saturday, March 26 at 7:30 p.m. The trumpeter, composer and activist returns for one night only of standards and new classics.
A Jazz Orchestra of Lincoln Center and SFJAZZ Collective veteran “who combines artistry and virtuosity, with a sound reminiscent of vintage Freddie Hubbard and Lee Morgan yet completely modern” (Jazz Times), Sean Jones continues to take jazz to new heights as a trumpeter, a composer and a leader.
The Chicago Tribune notes “the pinpoint focus of his tone and hard-bop influence of his musical language, providing the best of two worlds: elegant phrasemaking and energy-charged rhythm… Even at his most rambunctious, Jones wants his horn to sing.”
Leading his Quartet to close a set at New York’s Jazz Standard, Jones delivered “his most uncorked performance, firing bullets from all over the upper range of his horn. The band blazed hard behind him, at a precarious tempo; when it was all over, the crowd seemed almost stunned into its applause” (The New York Times).
