WCLK Celebrates Rodney E. Evans, Sr. for 40 Years of Service to Atlanta Radio and Gospel Music

The stars aligned this past Sunday evening as Jazz 91.9 WCLK honored one of Atlanta’s most beloved voices in gospel music. Rodney E. Evans, Sr., veteran broadcaster, philanthropist, and host of the long-running radio show Joy In the Morning, was celebrated for 40 years of dedicated service to the Atlanta community and gospel radio.

Held at Martin Street Church of God, the sanctuary was filled with a packed audience who gathered to witness an unforgettable evening of praise, music, and heartfelt recognition. Evans, whose show airs weekdays from 4 AM to 6 AM and Sundays from 6 AM to 11 AM, has been a beacon of inspiration to countless listeners throughout the decades.

The celebration featured powerful musical tributes from national gospel artists, including Kevin Styles & Psalms, Micah Stampley, and the legendary Keith Pringle. The musical performances brought the crowd to their feet, but it was the emotional presentations that truly moved the honoree.

Among the evening’s highlights were:

  • A Fulton County Proclamation honoring Evans’ legacy from District 4 Commissioner Mo Ivory
  • A Crystal Award presented by WCLK General Manager Wendy F. Williams and Program Director David C. Linton
  • Special plaques from Billboard Media Base, JDI Entertainment, and Tasha Cobbs Leonard, recognizing Evans for playing a pivotal role in making Cobbs Leonard’s single “Burdens Down” a No. 1 hit

“Rodney is a treasure to Atlanta’s Gospel Community and to our listeners,” said General Manager Wendy F. Williams. “For years, we have been blessed by his ability to connect with listeners and the musicians he plays. His words of encouragement and ministry through music are unmatched.”

Additional performances by Tiunna Lemons & Higher Calling, David Walker, Darius Paulk, and more made the night one of celebration, reflection, and deep appreciation for Evans’ immense contributions to gospel broadcasting.
