You are invited to join in the celebration of Revelations on its January 31st birthday, which precedes Black History Month. For all of February, everyone is invited to enjoy a free filmed 2015 Lincoln Center performance of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in the American masterpiece Revelations.
Since its first performance at the 92nd Street YM-YWHA on January 31, 1960, Revelations has become a cultural treasure, acclaimed as a must?see for all. The soul-stirring ballet has been called a “phenomenon,” likened to this country’s national anthem in a dance and, according to Oprah Winfrey, “every American owes it to him and herself to see the Alvin Ailey troupe perform [Alvin Ailey’s signature masterpiece] Revelations….it’s magical, spiritual and hopeful - everything that we want ourselves to be and hope that our country will be.”
Choreographed when Alvin Ailey was only 29 years old, Revelations is an intimate reflection inspired by childhood memories of growing up in the south during the depression, attending services at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Texas, and by the work of writers James Baldwin and Langston Hughes. The ballet pays homage to the rich cultural heritage of the African-American on a journey from struggle to surrender to salvation that ultimately speaks to our common humanity and the power of faith and hope.
