During Black History Month, Ailey Extension is encouraging Atlantans to get moving February 19 – February 21. Ailey Extension and AREA Atlanta are coming together to make the multi-day Ailey Experience Destination Dance Atlanta event into a virtual affair for the first time ever in the five-year history of its collaboration as part of Destination Dance Ailey Atlanta.
Taught by current Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Company members, the three-day weekend workshop experience immerses greater Atlanta residents in the spirit of Ailey with classes in Horton, contemporary, and West African techniques, while introducing dancers to the exciting world of choreography, creativity, and fun in a non-competitive environment. There is a class for everyone. A free Alvin Ailey Global Influence Panel kicking off the weekend featuring former Ailey dancers who are now prominent directors of various parts of the Ailey organization - Tracy Inman, co-director of The Ailey School, Lisa Johnson-Willingham, director of Ailey Extension, and Nasha Thomas, national director of AileyCamp.
Also, throughout the month everyone is invited to enjoy a free filmed 2015 Lincoln Center performance of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in the American masterpiece Revelations. It’s a wonderful way to celebrate and extend the positive impact of this cultural treasure as it steps into a seventh decade of inspiring audiences everywhere.
