Here's the press release, with more info on The Gathering--
Fulton County will celebrate a significant milestone for a beloved public facility on Sunday, April 27, with a big event marking the 25th anniversary of Hammonds House Museum. Over its lifespan, the county-owned facility, first opened to the public in February 1988, has become an important cultural institution around the world, and a landmark for arts and culture in Atlanta’s historic West End community.
The Gathering, 3-5 pm at the stately historic manor, celebrates the silver anniversary of Atlanta’s premiere gallery for art from the African Diaspora, and reflects on the contributions of arts patron Dr. Otis Thrash Hammonds. And in a manner befitting the gallery’s namesake… who was known to have a flair for bringing fabulous people together around beautiful things… it will be a colorful, enriching affair filled with art, music, food, fashion and fun!
The day features a variety of cultural experiences intended to engage all the senses. Think of The Gathering as a canvass for individual artistic expression.
Meandering through the gallery and grounds, guests can listen to live jazz in the garden by the dynamic youth ensemble Audio Wolf, while inside, the masterful sounds of Kevin Spears on his ethereal Kalimba fills the air. Visitors can leave their mark on a collective communal work of art; be immortalized in caricature by artist Hassan Tariq; and preview the exciting African-inspired fashion designs of Suakoko Betty.
Honorary Hosts Ed Spriggs, art consultant, administrator and curator who was Hammonds House first Executive Director; Dr. Michael Lomax, the Fulton County Commission Chair who acquired the home for the County; and acclaimed poet Sonia Sanchez will be on hand to welcome guests and participating artists. With the featured exhibition by Atlanta sculptor Etienne Jackson on display, guests will be able to have up close and personal encounters with featured artists Lynn Marshall-Linnemeier, Radcliff Bailey and Sanchez. Bailey, a former participant in the HHM Artist in Residence program, has generously agreed to create an original painting that will be auctioned at the event.
Benefit tickets to The Gathering are $40 for members/ $50 for non-members. To purchase tickets and keep up with the latest, go to www.hammondshouse.org, or call 404-612-0499. Many thanks to our sponsors for The Gathering: Georgia Pacific, WSB-TV, WCLK-FM radio and The Atlanta Voice.
