CAU Alum Horace Henry Captured History, Now Featured At Smithsonian

Horace Henry
L-R Rev. Martin Luther King Sr., Alberta Williams King, Coretta Scott King, Harry Belafonte at Ebenezer Baptist Church Jan. 15, 1969

Saturday, September 17 on The Local Take on Jazz 91.9 WCLK, I talk with Clark Atlanta University Alumnus Horace Henry, who as a student at CAU in 1969.  Henry took his new camera with him to attend the ecumenical service for Martin Luther King, Jr.   Henry's photos of that historic event, the first real birthday observance for Dr. King after his 1968 assassination, are now featured in the new National Museum of African American History and Culture at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.

He shares with us that an usher for the ceremony approached him and directed him in the sanctuary with the other members of the press. Horace took pictures of the speakers and attendants including the King family, celebrities and Atlanta's business community.

Forty years later, Horace came across the negatives, and developed 43 of the 48 prints that he took. The 11 x 14 prints adorn his home. Friends suggested that he should share the images. In 2012 Horace self published the book One Day in January which has been sold worldwide.

When he learned about the new museum Horace reached out to them, mentioning his book. Initially they were not enthusiastic, but when he mentioned that he owned the prints a curator came to Atlanta. He shares with us the process of making the donation.  The museum officially opens to the public on September 24.
