The Local Take: Nicholas House "Sleep Out" to Help Homeless Families
Saturday I spoke with Terrisita Terry about Nicholas House and their upcoming "Sleep Out" fundraiser on October 13th.
The Nicholas House is a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting homeless families making the transition from homelessness to self-sufficiency. Ms. Terry explains that often families who seek shelter are separated by sex or age and not allowed to be housed together. At Nicholas House they ensure that families can all be housed together no matter their make-up.
Additionally Ms. Terry shares that they continue to work with homeless families to address the underlying causes of their situation. It could be assistance with employment or health. The Nicholas House also offers programming to help the children of homeless families with after school programs and summer camps.
With the closing of the Peachtree Pine Street shelter the demand for housing has risen. Nicholas House is attempting to meet this demand with solutions.
On Friday, October 13th Nicholas House will host a "Sleep Out" on their campus where everyday citizens can experience what is like to sleep outside with cardboard as your bed. This experience includes a fundraising component for participants.
If you are interested in participating with the Sleep Out register now.
