The Weeping Time - March 2 - 3, 1859 - Savannah, Georgia

The Weeping Time March 2 - 3, 1859

Two years ago I spoke with Dr. Kwesi deGraft -Hanson about his discovery of The Weeping Time.  The Weeping Time refers to the largest documented sell off of enslaved humans ever recorded in North America. It happened in Savannah, Georgia. This weekend marks the 159th Anniversary. Saturday morning at 8:00am on The Local Take We'll revisit that conversation with the first of a two part special edition.

Stay tuned next week for the second half of my original conversation with Dr. deGraft-Hanson, as well as an update. In 2017 there was a commemoration at Peidmont Park.  This year there was a full commemoration on March 2nd in Savannah, Georgia at the Ten Broeck Race Course on the outskirts of the city.

Listen to our original conversationand don't forget to tune in on March 10th to learn about the 160th Anniversary Commemoration being planned for 2019.
