Jazz Passages: Kevin Mahogany, Keely Smith

Kansas City Star
Kevin Mahogany

The Jazz world has lost two notable vocalists this week, each memorable in their own era.  Jazz 91.9 WCLK listeners know Kevin Mahogany's rich, baritone vocals, featured on 10 of his albums since 1993. Mahogany, who also played clarinet and saxophone, taught at the University of Miami and Berklee College of Music. Mahogany passed away on Sunday, December 17.

Also passing on December 17 at age 89 was Vocalist Keely Smith, who was best known for touring and performing with her husband Louis Prima in the 1950s before performing and recording as a solo artist in the 1960s. Some of Smith's memorable hits include "That Ol' Black Magic," "I've Got You Under My Skin," and "I Wish You Love." Rest in peace.
