'Ain't Too Proud,' 'Choir Boy,' 'Hadestown' & more receive Tony Award Nominations

It was all about  #BlackBoyJoy this past Tuesday as a good number of African American Broadway actors and shows picked up Tony Award nominations. The highly anticipated show will air live on Sunday, June 9 at 8 p.m. on CBS.

Ain’t Too Proud , the musical about Motown’s legendary quintet The Temptations picked up 12 nominations including “Best Musical,” Best Book of a Musical,” and Best Costume Design. Three of the show’s five stars—Ephraim Sykes, Derrick Baskin and Jeremy Pope----were also nominated for their roles.

The LGBT coming-of-age story CHOIR BOY also picked up four nominations including “Best Choreography” and “Best Sound Design of a Play” as well as “Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role – Play” for Jeremy Pope and “Best Play” for Oscar winner Tarrell Alvin McCraney.

Other black nominees included stage legend Andre De Shields for his role in Hadestown, George C. Wolfe for “Best Direction of a Play” for Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus, Lillie Cooper for Tootsie and Amber Gray for Hadestown.
