After years of playing with some of the biggest names in music guitarist Allen Hinds takes front and center on his single I Keep Forgettin'. If the title sounds familiar, it’s because it is the classic song performed by Michael McDonald. Allen remains true to the original version giving it a soulful sound as Michael did with his voice. Allen Hinds has played with such notable artists like Natalie Cole, The Crusaders, Hiroshima, Randy Crawford, Marc Antoine, Boney James and so many others.
He attended Berklee College of Music so it’s no surprise he has such great guitar chops but what many may not know is he’s also an accomplished author! He’s also has a YouTube channel where he gives instructions on guitar playing. Allen has also created music for TV shows such as JAG, Pawn Stars and others.
As a programmer I’m always looking for songs that will balance out the horns (saxophones) so prevalent in the Smooth Jazz format today. Allen delivers with this jewel because it checks a few boxes I look for when selecting music for WCLK: 1. It balances/compliments the other songs we’re playing 2. helps the goal of trying to find songs that will keep listeners engaged, in this case, it’s familiar but it could be a good hook 3. It makes me want to play it again 4. Is it a WCLK song: “smooth with a groove”! I’m sure you won’t forget to groove when you hear I Keep Forgettin' on the S.O.U.L of Jazz with Jamal Ahmad on Atlanta’s Jazz Station WCLK.
