Serial Blackface Takes On Atlanta's Forgotten History At Actor's Express

Tinashe Kajese-Bolden and Gilbert Glenn Brown

On the April 16 edition of Local Take I spoke with with Freddie Ashley, Tinashe Kajese-Bolden and Gilbert Glenn Brown about their new Actor's Express production Serial Blackface. Playwright, Janine Nabers turns her focus to Atlanta during the 1979 - 1981 period when the series of children and, young men's murders gripped the city and the African American community. Twenty-eight African American men and young boys were first missing then found murdered.  A 23 year old, Wayne Williams was convicted of the last two murders and authorities closed the remaining cases.   Janine Nabers brings the story to life with wonderful characters.

Actor Tinahse Kajese-Bolden, who plays Vivian, explains that Serial Blackface is a love story at heart but also a thriller. She talks about the challenge of playing a character who doesn't yet know the outcome of her situation.

Gilbert Glenn Brown who portrays the "Man with a Face" speaks of charming characters that we encounter in life and the tensions that occur when you are getting to know new people.

Freddie Ashley, the director speaks about the time in Atlanta when everyone was speaking about the Atlanta Child Murders and that it is now a story almost lost to history.

Serial Blackface is showing at Actor's Express through April 24, Wednesdays - Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 2:00 p.m.  Actor's Express is located in the King Plow Arts Center in West Midtown.  Click here for more information and tickets.
