November 15: Atlanta Business League Honors Winnifred Watts Hemphill

2016 ABL Honoree Winifred Watts Hemphill

WCLK congratulates Winifred Watts Hemphill—among the newest inductees into the Atlanta Business League Hall of Fame. A graduate of Howard University Law School, this great grand-daughter of a former Georgia slave is president of South-View Cemetery. The cemetery was developed on a 25 acre property her grandfather and four other freedmen purchased in 1886. This historic cemetery now sits on 100 acres and is the final resting place for Rev. Martin Luther King, Sr., Alonzo Herndon (the founder of the Atlanta Life Insurance Company) and Bishop Henry McNeal Turner (the Reconstruction-era state legislator and the organizer of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.) Ms. Hemphill also oversees operations of the South-View Preservation Foundation, Inc., the non-profit portion of the organization. It continues its mission to record, interpret, restore and preserve the art, history and environment of the non-perpetual care sections of historic South-View Cemetery.

Programming on WCLK is sponsored in part by The Atlanta Business League, presenting the 83rd Annual Meeting on Tuesday, November 15 at the Delta Flight Museum. This evening of networking, recognition and the year in review will feature the 2016 ABL Hall of Fame induction of Ballethnic Dance Theatre Co-Founders Nena Gilreath and Waverly T. Lucas II, Southview Cemetery President Winnifred Watts Hemphill, and Mack Willbourn, owner and president of Mack II, Inc.. Reception is at 5:30pm followed by dinner.
