The Local Take: Happy Birthday Rev. Lowery, Change Agents With The Lowery Institute
This week on WCLK's The Local Take(Saturdays 8am) I speak with representatives from the Joseph E. Lowery Institute For Justice and Human Rights. Alexandria Harris is a Change Leader and Nicholas Arosemena is a Change Agent. We discuss their Civic Engagement team which is promoting voter registration. Nicholas, a student at Morehouse College, shares with us that over 100 college students in metro-Atlanta are Lowery Institute Change Agents. I ask Nicholas why they chose to focus on voter registration. He shares a quote by Rev. Joseph E. Lowery, that “voting is a moral obligation.” I ask Ms. Harris how the Lowery Institute is able to motivate young people to be involved and she speaks about continuing a legacy that began with the Lowery family, both Rev. Lowery and his wife Evelyn. She also explains that the young people can choose where they serve on various committees. Many of the students go above and beyond the required hours because they are passionate about their focus. Harris mentions that the Lowery Institute will celebrate Dr. Lowery’s 98th birthday celebration with a dinner and concert featuring Regina Belle on Thursday, Oct. 10th at the Georgia Freight Depot. You can get more information about the celebration on their website loweryinstitute.org.
