The Local Take: African And Christian Traditions Merge At Zion Hill Baptist Church

This week on The Local Take I speak with Erika Neal about the Rites of Passage program at Zion Hill Baptist Church.  The program, begun over 20 years ago by pastor Dr. Aaron Parker, is based on African traditions

Neal shares with us that the Rites of Passage program provides a platform for young people in the community.  The program is designed for youth ages 13-18  takes place over 13 weeks.  The youth explore topics and experiences that help shape them into productive members of the community.

The closing ceremony known as the Oukumo will celebrate more than 50 y0ung people in completing their Rites of Passage.  The "village" is invited to attend and celebrate the passage of their young people into adulthood.  The community is asked to join the celebration in the African tradition.  After the Oukumo, the Karumu, or village feast, will take place featuring foods from the African diaspora.

Attendees are asked to dressed in African clothing.

The celebration which is open to the public, is taking place on Sunday, November 10th at 5 p.m. at Zion Hill Baptist Church, 6175 Campbellton Road.
