The Local Take Talks With Incoming APS Superintendent Dr. Lisa Herring

Saturday morning at 8am on WCLK's The Local Take I speak with Dr. Lisa Herring, who will take the helm of Atlanta Public Schools as Superintendent on July 1st.  She is a graduate of Spelman College who grew up in Macon and has worked in DeKalb County Schools.  Herring says that her new position is like "coming home."

Her opportunity to return home has occured during a pandemic, I ask about this challenge.  She speaks to currently acting as a consultant to APS as the transition occurs.  Additionally as the current Superintendent of Birmingham, Alabama Schools she has been in conversation with school board leaders, government officials and health experts for the, last few weeks.

Herring is also known for creating robust public/private partnerships in support of education, I ask her if all schools would benefit from these endeavors.  She shares her desire to create educational equity with policies around those partnerships.

She also shares information about her career in education which began with her love books and reading. Her grandmother told her she'd work with children.
