March 9: Shades of Blue With Rivablue @ Cafe 290

Rivablue

Come hear and experience the sounds of Afro Jazz with YemiConga and friends at Cafe 290 Wednesday, March 9 at 8:00 p.m. for the latest edition of Shades of Blue.  I'll host a musical tribute to Hugh Masekela and Miriam Makeba . It’s an Afro Jazz Explosion with percussive sounds and voices.

In the 1950’s Hugh Masekela co –led a  group with Pianist Abdullah Ibrahim and Saxophonist Kippie Maeketsi. Together they fused the sounds of Africa with Be-bop. Masekela wrote many songs in protest of apartheid and poverty in South Africa.

Miriam Makeba born in Johannesburg and always wanted to leave home, but didn’t know they would stop her from returning when she left in 1963.  Makeba was a singer, songwriter, actress and civil rights activist. In 1990, Makeba would finally return to her home. Her individual hits included “ The Click Song” and “Malika”. Miriam Makeba was considered one of the most exciting singers by Time Magazine.   A musical about Miriam Makeba is being produced in South Africa by Niyi Coker entitled Zenzi and is scheduled to premiere in 2016.

Join me Wednesday evening, March 9 at Cafe 290 in Sandy Springs for this celebration of Afro Jazz. Performance begins at 8:00 p.m. at Cafe 290, 290 Hilderbrand Drive Northeast, Atlanta, GA 30328

Phone:  (404) 256-3942 for reservations.
