Yolanda Adams: The First Lady of Urban Inspirational Music

Yolanda Adams brought Gospel into the Contemporary R&B. Rising from Houston’s church community, she became one of the first Gospel artists to achieve true crossover success—without ever compromising her message.

Her albums Mountain High… Valley Low, Believe, and The Experience set new standards for inspirational music, earning her multiple Grammys and positioning her as a global ambassador for Gospel. Songs like Open My Heart, The Battle Is the Lord’s, and Never Give Up became anthems of faith for millions. Adams’ voice—warm, soaring, and unmistakably royal—helped redefine the sound of gospel for a new generation. Whether on stage, radio, or television, she continues to represent excellence, empowerment, and the enduring power of faith-filled music.

An Atlanta native who hails from a closely knit family of seven siblings, Evans learned early on, from his mother, the importance of the fear of God, the value of family, walking in honesty and integrity, obtaining a good education and pursuing one’s life’s dreams. Upon completing studies in the Atlanta Public Schools system, he entered Columbia School of Broadcasting where he majored in Mass Communication/Radio Broadcasting and obtained a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) license in 1985.
