Every Thursday afternoon during the month of June on The S.O.U.L Of Jazz, WCLK will acknowledge Black Music Month with a spotlight series celebrating the lives and accomplishments of those jazz figures who have made significant contributions to the genre of jazz. We will kick off the series honoring the life and legacy of Al Foster, a true titan of jazz drumming. Foster recently passed away at the age of 82 and was known for his elegant touch, impeccable timing, and deep musical sensitivity, Foster was a vital force behind the kits of some of jazz’s greatest legends, including Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, and Joe Henderson.
Over a career spanning six decades, Al Foster brought warmth, swing, and an intuitive sense of groove to every performance. Whether powering the electric experiments of the ’70s or delivering subtle brushwork in an intimate trio, he always played with heart and soul.
