The 100 Black Men of America is a men’s civic and service organization. Their mission is to educate and empower African-American boys and teenagers. The organization has grown to have chapters in most cities throughout the United States and worldwide. The 100 Black Men of South Metro Atlantaare hosting their Celebration of Scholarship Awards Dinner this evening. The organization is dedicated to mentoring young Black men in grades 8th - 12th and has several chapters in our area. James Stewart of the Atlanta South Metro Chapter tells us about the organization and his chapter.
Stewart shares that the national organization has a focus on mentoring. They provide guidance to keep young men on track for success. From health & wellness to financial literacy and interview skills, young men receive instruction.
Young men often attend college, some enter the military, and others become journeymen learning trades and technology. Stewart speaks to the members sharing their wisdom about life’s pitfalls. Teaching that the world is difficult but with the right skills, success is possible.
Stewart shares an anecdote about his mentee who received special permission to join in the 7th grade. The young man has since graduated from college and is married. Stewart explains that they keep track of the young men and that, often, the commitment is for a lifetime. Young men who have come through the program come back to mentor new members.
Saturday, April 29th, the South Metro Atlanta Chapter of the 100 Black Men will host a scholarship dinner and honor the young men in their chapter. The dinner takes place at the Marriott Gateway Hotel. For more information on this event.
