The Local Take will be an honorary host for the 2023 Family Food Fest, which is an Atlanta tradition for Father’s Day. The Family Food Fest is taking place on June 18th from 3 - 6 PM at the Georgia Freight Depot. This celebration of food and family supports Atlanta Culinary Charities, which provides exposure and scholarships for young people seeking careers in the culinary industry. The chef coordinator Chef Kevin Ashford of Catered Cakes, shares highlights for this year’s event.
Every year participants vote for their favorite chef. Folks may not be aware that often the winning chef of Family Food Fest goes on to higher achievements, including appearances on television food shows. I asked Chef Ashford if home and professional chefs could still participate in this year’s event. He explained that they are still enrolling chefs, caterers, and restaurants to share their food.
I ask Ashford to share highlights from this year’s event. He mentions that there will be a vast array of food, from BBQ to desserts to soul food to cakes. There will also be a KID ZONE hosted by the award-winning Stepp Stewart. Kids will learn dance steps, how to make balloon animals, and more. Additionally, there will be a HEALTH ZONE where screening for diabetes and high blood pressure, and other health challenges will be available. Chuck Robb will also be on hand as the honorary host.
Chef Ashford explains that the Family Food Fest offers our community an opportunity to eat well-prepared food with great nutritional value. Participants will even be able to learn how to cook healthy but tasty meals.
