The US Postal Service Honors Congressman John Lewis with a new Forever Stamp in 2023. John Lewis, Congressman for Atlanta’s Fifth District and pivotal Civil Rights leader, will be honored at the “first-day-of-issue” event on Friday, July 21st, at Noon on the Morehouse College campus. This ceremony is open to the public, but all are encouraged to register at usps.com/johnlewis.
We’re speaking with Michael Collins, the former Chief of Staff to Congressman Lewis and current board chair for the John and Lillian Miles Lewis Foundation.
I ask Collins how he feels being part of the great honor of Congressman John Lewis, and he shares that he worked for the congressman for 21 years. Collins explains that Congressman Lewis was a stamp collector who often purchased a sleeve of commemorative stamps on their “first-day-of-issue.”
When asked what this means for the community, Collins speaks about the commemorative stamp being an extension of his legacy. He says the honor means much to the Fifth District, which Congressman Lewis represented, to Atlanta and our country. He speaks about Lewis’ legacy with the passage of the 1991 Voting Rights Act and his work to help establish the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
Collins shares how he came to work as the Congressman and speaks about the work of the John and Lillian Miles Lewis Foundation. He encourages everyone to attend the event at Morehouse College on July 21st at noon.
