The Black Writers Weekend will occur August 3rd - 6th at various locations throughout metro Atlanta, including the Auburn Avenue Research Library and the Riverside Epic Center. I speak with the event director and founder, TamikaNewhouse, about the upcoming weekend.

Newhouse shares that she developed the concept 15 years ago when she self-published her first book and needed to create awareness about her endeavor. She needed a book signing that would stand out and attract attention. She curated an event that included food, music, art, poetry, and a reading from her book.

She realized that other authors self-published or with small publishers might need access to the same type of activity. Newhouse realized there were many approaches to the book industry and wanted to ensure that writers were treated like “Rock Stars.”

Newhouse shares that a few highlights include a Pitchfest where writers speed date with editors and movie distributors. Newhouse says this is an important event due to the Writer's Strike. There will be workshops for children’s book writers and romance writers. There will also be a “Literary Crawl” that participants can pop into.
