One of the biggest contributors to bankruptcy in our country is healthcare challenges. When people have to deal with catastrophic health diagnoses and treatment, they are often left in the lurch even if they have insurance. One such diagnosis that impacts women is breast cancer. Often, partners/husbands leave, and the patient is left to handle the disease and the financial challenges on their own. Cancer Survivor Resources, founded by Linda Whitlow, is in place to provide some relief to those in this situation.

I ask Whitlow how she came to start Cancer Survivor Resources and she speaks about people who have the best insurance and still have out of pocket expenses involved with their care. She shares that people should get the best insurance coverage they can afford. Her organization was born out of a desire to help cancer survivors.

She shares that many people don’t consider that their health challenge might involve a financial challenge. People may not realize they are underinsured until after receiving a cancer diagnosis. Whitlow speaks about obtaining supplemental insurance such as AFLAC when I ask what coverage people should consider she speaks about supplemental insurance such as AFLAC.

Whitlow explains that her organization Cancer Survivor Resources steps into the gap and provides financial assistance for rent, utilities, food and transportation.
