Georgia is known as a voter suppression state and we reached out to The Georgia Justice Project about their work assisting those folks who have had contact with our state’s criminal justice system to separate the facts from fiction and myth regarding who has the right to vote in our state. Dominique Harris the Outreach Partner with the Georgia Justice Project joins us and breaks it all down.

I asked Harris about the facts concerning felony convictions he explained your voting rights are only temporarily suspended. He also shares that if you have a misdemeanor conviction you should register to vote.

Harris speaks about Georgia’s draconian probation system that was recently changed through state legislation. At one time our state had probation lasting over 10 years. This led to quite a bit of recidivism and is another reason that local elections are so important.

When asked about keeping up with the laws, new legislation, and challenges with legal fees how does the average citizen keep up? Harris spoke about First Fridays where specific questions and concerns can be addressed.

The Georgia Justice Project can be found across social media platforms.
