The American Civil Liberties Union has been fighting for voter rights since 1965 when it established the Voting Rights Project to fight voter suppression. Using courts, advocacy, public education, litigation, and more they list three principles 1-All Americans should be eligible to vote, 2-Voting should be free and easy, and 3-All people should count equally. Christopher Bruce an attorney and the Policy & Advocacy Director with the ACLU of Georgia will be working this election cycle to ensure that everyone can use their vote to be heard.
I asked Bruce to tell us about the ACLU’s Voting Rights Project as vote suppression is rampant nationwide. He speaks about the Voting Rights Project which opened as an office in Atlanta and was a precursor to the ACLU-Georgia office. Currently, the Voting Access Project litigates against voter suppression.
Bruce discusses the misinformation and disinformation surrounding claims of election fraud. Of course, legal challenges regarding November 5th have already begun. I asked if the ACLU was expecting legal challenges after the vote. Bruce explains that this will be another secure election with little to no fraud. He also shares that many organizations have been working since the 2020 election to ensure our elections are free and safe.
I ask about the rise in poll watchers, Bruce shares that there will be both poll watchers and election monitors. Neither can or should prevent you from voting. He walks us through a plan to vote on November 5th. It starts with making sure your voting location is where you think it is as many precinct locations have changed. Additionally, check to make sure you have a valid ID (Georgia License or US Passport). Voting locations are open from 7AM - 7PM
If you have any challenges or difficulties voting or have a legal question about anything that happens you can reach out to 1-866-OUR-VOTE.
