Habitat for Humanity is a non-governmental, non-profit global organization that works to ensure people have a decent place to live. Habitat has a mission to provide decent housing through God’s love in action by bringing communities together to help build needed homes. David Mitchell, Program Manager for Habitat for Humanity - DeKalb joins us to speak about the organization, its programs, and fundraising.
I asked Mitchell to explain the work of Habitat for Humanity to folks who may not be familiar with the organization. He speaks to over 1000 affiliates belonging to this international organization that builds and renovates housing. They operate in over 70 countries and have touched the lives of millions of global citizens.
Mitchell shares that while they partner with corporations and community organizations individuals can volunteer to work with Habitat for Humanity as well. The Blue Jeans, BBQ, and Blueprints Festival is not only for community engagement and outreach, but teams will build “playground” equipment for local parks and schools. In addition to this challenge, there will be workshops and resources regarding home ownership. Musicians including a drumline competition will perform. The Atlanta Square Dancers will perform and food trucks will be on hand with a variety of offerings. Habitat DeKalb will also present awards for their volunteers of the year.
Mitchell speaks about “Homeownership” changing the mindset of families. Providing a stable living environment results in 65% better health outcomes, increased financial savings, and children do better in school. Interested vendors should reach out to Habitat DeKalb.
