Springtime is Prom Time, and this year we’re highlighting Menswear designer Miguel Wilson, whose shop is located at Phipps Plaza. For the second year, he’s providing 100 tuxedos to deserving young students who have good grades and more.
When I asked Wilson how he came up with the idea of providing tuxedos, he mentioned “clothing being his ministry.” He also speaks about Prom being a huge event in the life of young people and that some teens forgo prom because of the clothing expense.
Wilson explains that when he presents the young person with their very own tuxedo, it is transformative. They walk and talk differently, their entire posture changes with the new suit.
He shares that fashion and how you dress is a form of communication. Your clothing says something to everyone you meet.
The recipients of the prom tuxedo are deserving based on their work in the community, having good grades and a financial need. Wilson works with school administrators, and nonprofits such as the 100 Black Men of American and local churches including New Birth in DeKalb county.
Wilson’s work with the community extends beyond prom time. He supports the first HBCU Polo Team at Morehouse College and introduces youth to horses and polo beginning with middle and high school students. He has locations in New York’s garment district, Maryland’s National Harbor, Coral Gables, and Phipps Plaza.
