The academic year is beginning. That seminal time of year when summer is coming to an end, birds are flying south, and eager students are beginning classes on college campuses across the country. I reached out to Dr. Chris Bass, the interim dean leading The School of Arts and Sciences.
I asked Dr. Bass if he could share a memory from one of his first days of school. Bass shared three first-day-of-school experiences: undergrad, professor, and administrator.
Clark Atlanta University has experienced record applications for the last few years. The new academic year is no exception. I asked Bass about our new reality and his position as Interim Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. His is the largest school, Bass explains that 61% of students at Clark Atlanta matriculate in the School of Arts and Sciences. He reminds students to focus on the reason they are there. Bass goes on to remind students that they are not alone. Bass encourages freshmen to start the year strong. Learn about different strategies from peers and upperclassmen.
Bass explains that students at Clark Atlanta University experience the beauty of being educated at the seat of Black Intellectuals.
I also reached out to my professor from the School of Business at CAU, Dr. Dennis Kimbro. He encourages students to get acclimated to what is about to take place. He breaks down the number of hours they will be in class working with and learning the teaching styles of between 10 - 20 professors. Kimbro explains that he introduces students to the four greatest prayers - The Lord’s Prayer, The Beattitudes, St Francis of Assisi, and Mother Teresa.
I asked Kimbro if the university was ready to take on more students, and he responded, “We better be!” He says that adaptability means change or being changed.
Both professors spoke highly of their colleagues and other professors. They also encouraged alumni to reach out and get involved.
